Another possibility is the seaward sediment transport by wave and hyperpycnal plume-induced gravity flows, which have been observed at the mouth of high-load rivers such as Atchafalaya, Fly, Ganges-Brahmaputra, Klamath, Mad, Mississippi, Po, Rhone, Yellow 18 and also possibly Changjiang. Meanwhile, in a conceptual model for the dispersal of the Changjiang sediment on the shelf, Oguri et al. (2003) show the possible alongshore sediment transport by currents and across-shelf transport within the downslope migrating nepheloid layers seaward of the mouth of Changjiang 29. Meanwhile, even on gentle slope, wave- or current-induced velocity shear could keep sediment in suspension, allowing long-distance gravity-driven transport on most shelves 18.

    Consequently, there is still a substantial amount of sediment entering the delta region. Furthermore, during the neap tide, sediment is transported into the river mouth from offshore, providing material to the coastal accretion 15. Therefore, it is likely the CSD itself could also be an immediate sediment source 16. There is no doubt that in the scenario of declining sediment supply from the river, the erosion or progradation of the subaerial delta is closely linked to the changes of the submerged delta 22. Moreover, the CSD has been widely considered to be the most productive and valuable aquatic areas along the ECS margin, which is of a special significance to the Changjiang estuarine ecosystem 23. However, a thorough evaluation of the CSD in face of the declining sediment supply from the river due to the impacts of TGD has been lacking. Thereafter, this study examines the morphological changes in terms of the erosion and accumulation of the CSD in the past 50 years and possible impacting factors. The result should be extremely valuable in the study of the changes of the Changjiang subaerial delta and its wetlands and can be applied to other large river deltas in the world. Full size image Results The deposition-erosion patterns before TGD Long-term bathymetric survey data can accurately reflect the morphological changes of the submerged delta. When incorporated into the DTM (digital terrain model), it becomes a useful tool to study morphological changes of river mouths 24, 25. Records of the maximum tidal level at Wusong since 1955 were obtained from Hydrological Bureau of the Changjiang Estuary. In addition, the data of the sediment load into the S. Channel and S. Passage came from the Hydrological Bureau of the Changjiang Estuary, China. The data from the analysis of sediment samples came from the State Key Laboratory for Estuarine Research based on the sieving method. The computation of the medium grain size was based on Folk et al. (1970) 38. Since TGD became operational in 2003, the Changjiang sediment discharge has drastically declined ( Fig. 2a ). Compared to the pre-1970 values, the sediment load after 2003 dropped by about 70%. It is reasonable to assume that 2003 is a critical year. Meanwhile, 54% of the water flux was lost at Datong during September 20 to October 27, 2006, in comparison with the same period in 2005. It can be estimated that the impounding of TGD and the extreme drought in 2006 contributed 9% and 45% of this loss, respectively. In 2006, natural and human events, which include extreme high temperatures, low annual rainfall, the worst drought of the Changjiang River in the last 50 years, and the impounding of TGD from 135 m to 156 m, all occurred simultaneously. If water shortage in the Changjiang reaches a crisis point, it could seriously influence development of the economics and industry of the Changjiang basin, especially the MLRCR basin since the Changjiang basin is the axis of the economic development in China. Thus, the purpose of this study was focused on the changes in the runoff of MLRCR during 2006 and discussion of the reasons for changes in discharge.

    When it compared with the Mississippi delta, after each channel switching, the old channel was abandoned and a new delta, a new dynamic equilibrium, is formed at the location of the new channel 18, 32. However, the whole Changjiang deltaic system remains at the same location; only the active center of deposition shits locations in response to the changing major sediment supply from the branching channels. Obviously, the close and long-term link between the sediment load partition among branching channels and the depocenter location on the CSD is unique among major river systems in the world 13, 31. S4, online), which could be easily entrained under weak currents. The flows seaward of the mouth of the Changjiang are strong. The strong flows associated with this typhoon actually removed the accumulated sediments deposited around the channel openings left by the No. 9711 Typhoon in the previous year and re-deposited them on the shelf. Additionally, erosion occurred in the channels themselves. Conclusions As a major river in the world, the sedimentation and eco-geomorphology of the Changjiang delta has received international attention, especially under the condition of declining river sediment load. The location of the depocenter on the CSD varied according to the partition in the sediment load in the 3-tiered branching system of the adjacent estuary on the same time scale. Many major rivers in the world are facing deltaic erosion due to similar trends of declining river sediment load 5; and yet the CSD has not shown corresponding erosion, even though there was significant threat from the influence of the TGD. At the seaward end of a branching estuary, the CSD provides a typology for a deltaic system that responds to distal and proximal sediment sources on different spatial and temporal scales that is unique in the world. Thereafter, it is suggested that re-evaluation of the impacts of TGD on the world's CSD is urgently needed.

    Methods Navigational charts of different years provide suitable data for studying the depositional and erosional rates in delta and estuarine regions 19, 24, 25, 35, 36. In recent decades, there have been voluminous observational data of the water depth of the Changjiang Estuary, most of which have been for special purposes, such as for localized navigational channel and shoreline utilizations. Therefore, in this study, we collected published largescale charts of the entire Changjiang Estuary from the Navigation Guarantee Department of the Chinese Navy headquarters (NGDCNH) surveyed in 1958, 1978, 1989 and 2004 as the source of data to quantify the regional volume changes to reflect the changes in the sediment supply ( Supplementary Fig. S1, Tab. S1, online). Additionally, the bathymetric charts for the Changjiang Estuary in 1997, 2002, 2007 and 2009 were obtained from the Hydrological Bureau of the Changjiang Estuary and Shanghai Institute of Geological Survey, China ( Supplementary Tab. S1, Fig. S1, online). The DESO-17 echo-sounder was used for the depth measurements for these chartes including 2002, 2004, 2007 and 2009. For example, the 1978 chart was surveryed in 1976 and 1978 and the 1989 chart was surveyed in 1987 and 1989 ( Supplementary Tab. S1, online). Moreover, 1958, 1978, 1989 and 1997 data were surveyed by line echo-sounder. All surveys were carried out between early May and early June, prior to peak discharge and completed before August. The elevation in all the charts was based on the theoretical low-tide datum at Wusong. The volume we computed directly based on bathymetric charts is the volume of the water body in the confines of the Changjiang submerged delta (CSD) ( Fig. 1 ). It represents the capacity of the CSD as a receptacle of sediment 36. Our basic assumption is that the volume change is primarily caused by the depth change due to erosion and deposition on the seabed 19, 24, 25, 35.

    The study of the extreme drought event in the river basin will be helpful in improving the management of the Changjiang water resource and the allotment policy of the water resource among the Changjiang and the other tributaries and lakes.The discharges of Chenglingji and Hukou represent the runoff from Dongting and Poyang lakes into the Changjiang River.Moreover, the lowest water level of the flood season in history was observed in this year at each hydrological station along MLRCR ( Table 1 ).So, the obvious characteristics of MLRCR in 2006 is entitled here “no flood in the flood season, no drought in the dry season” (NFFS?NDDS).For MLRCR, the 2006 flood season discharge was almost equal to that in the dry season in normal years ( Figure 2 ).Thus, the runoff of Datong can be partially controlled by the changes of the runoff of Yichang, which represents the runoff of the upper reaches of the Changjiang River. However, because most of the areas in the upper reaches of the Changjiang River had suffered drought in the summer of 2006, the water level of Yichang was the lowest record in flood seasons in history ( Table 1 ). The mean runoff in the flood season in 2006 was around 65% of the mean runoff in flood seasons from 2000 to 2005. Therefore, the sharp decrease of the runoff from the upper reaches (Yichang) of the Changjiang River is one of the direct factors contributing to NFFS during 2006 in MLRCR. Therefore, the NFFS is mainly controlled by decrease of rainfall of both upper reaches and MLRCR.In addition, the discharge into the Dongting lake via three distributaries of the Changjiang River in 2006 accounted for only 9% of the discharge of the Chenglingji station. Obviously, these values are slightly higher than those in normal years ( Table 4 ), indicating that replenishment from lakes and tributaries in 2006 was higher than normal.Any queries (other than missing content) should be directed to the corresponding author for the article.

Copy URL Adding the Changjiang discharge intensifies the clockwise vorticity of the subsurface current (originating from the Taiwan Warm Current) flowing along the 50?m isobath and thus drives the low?salinity water in the northern coastal area of the Changjiang mouth offshore over a submerged plateau that extends toward Cheju Island. Given a model horizontal resolution of less than 1.0 km, the CDW front becomes baroclinically unstable and forms a chain of anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies. The offshore detachment of anticyclonic eddies can carry the CDW offshore. This process is enhanced under northward winds as a result of the spatially nonuniform interaction of wind?induced Ekman flow and eddy?generated frontal density currents. Characteristics of the model?predicted eddy field are consistent with previous theoretical studies of baroclinic instability of buoyancy?driven coastal density currents and existing satellite imagery. The plume stability is controlled by the horizontal Ekman number. In the Changjiang, this number is much smaller than the criterion suggested by a theoretical analysis. The drifters were released in summer 1986. Dots indicate the drifter locations every 5 d from launch.Can CDW detach from the main body of the plume without wind forcing. If so, what other process is important?It is divided into southern and northern branches by Chongming Island. Two smaller islands are located in the mouth of the southern branch, which divides this branch into two channels.

    At the mouth of the river, the bottom topography features four “deep” passages connected to the southern branch. There are also two relatively deep passages linked to the northern branch.In previous structured?grid, finite?difference models of the ECS, the Changjiang discharges were either specified as a point source or an idealized short channel flow. Ignoring the actual along?river surface pressure gradient in the Changjiang can cause an overestimation of the offshore advection and failure to resolve the nature of multiple outflows. The horizontal resolution used in these models was too coarse to resolve the abruptly varying bottom topography in the river channels and thus the models were unable to simulate the mesoscale structure of the Changjiang plume over the inner shelf of the ECS. As a result, the buoyancy contribution to the water transport, particularly for the offshore eastward detachment of CDW, was significantly underestimated.The finite?volume approach used in FVCOM guarantees local mass, momentum, heat, and tracer conservation, making it possible to trace the spread of CDW during a long?term integration.The process?oriented numerical model results under different physical conditions are presented in section 3. Section 4 presents a discussion and the conclusions summarized in section 5.The internal mode consists of fully 3?D governing equations and is solved using a longer time step constrained by the phase speed of the lowest mode internal wave. Linkage between external and internal modes is through the water elevation, with mode adjustments based on the vertically integrated volume transport at each internal time step. Unlike structured?grid finite?difference and unstructured?grid finite?element models, FVCOM solves the flux form of the governing equations in unstructured triangular volumes by a second?order accurate discrete flux scheme.     element methods in geometric flexibility and finite?difference methods in computational efficiency and provides an accurate representation of mass, momentum, heat, and salt conservation. In the vertical, the domain is divided into 30 uniform ? ?layers, which corresponded to a vertical resolution of 1.7 m or less in the Changjiang and coastal region where the water depth is shallower than 50 m. To reduce the model spin?up time, the model bathymetry off the slope in the western Pacific Ocean is cut at 800 m, a roughly e?folding depth of the Kuroshio Current.Labels A, B, C, D, and E indicate sections of the open boundary where water transports were specified. The hydrographic fields were constructed using 10?km box averaging of historical water temperature and salinity data collected in this region over the last 40 a. The inflow transports are (1) 2.1 Sv for the Taiwan Warm Current (TWC) through A and (2) 27.5 Sv for the Kuroshio east of Taiwan through B. These are balanced by outflow transports of (1) 26.9 Sv for the Kuroshio southeast of Japan (C), (2) 1.6 Sv through the Tsugaru Strait (D), and (3) 1.1 Sv through the Soya Strait (E). The outflow transport on C was adjusted to balance an additional inflow from the Changjiiang when the river discharge was added. The inflow and outflow transport values used here are based on the summertime climatology conditions.The Changjiang plume was established by model day 60. For the river discharge only case A, the model was run for an additional 30 d. For case B with river and wind forcing, the model was run for an additional 30 d followed by 7 d with no wind (to simulate a wind relaxation).To make the vector fields more viewable, current vectors were selected in a search radius of ?20 km.

    Correspondingly, the TWC, YSCC, YSWC, and Tsushima Warm Current are all intensified, even though the path and intensity of the Kuroshio change little. This experiment demonstrates that the eastward advection of these detached baroclinic eddies can form the isolated low?salinity lens observed between the Changjiang and Cheju Island.The unstable wave crests tended to propagate upstream (in the opposite direction to the main stream of the density current) and low?salinity water was transported to the outer shelf by the detached eddies. In this idealized case, baroclinic instability of the front occurs whenThis observed eddy field is similar in shape and size to that predicted by ECS?FVCOM, supporting the reality of the model?predicted CDW plume in the ECS.Owing to the large pressure gradient built by the CDW outflow, however, the summer winds have little influence on the CDW current inside the Changjiang. The interaction between wind and CDW plume is strongest near the edge of the salinity front where unstable waves occur.

Prior to the German invasion, the Soviets were already building copies of the R71, initially called the M-71 and later the M-72. Following the invasion, production was shifted from Moscow to Irbit (IMZ) in the Ural mountains where thousands were produced during the war and millions more to the present day. A second plant opened in Kiev (KMZ) also producing M-72’s. The M1M is a slightly modernized version with a proper distributor, 12V electrical system and electric starter while the M1S is an OHV machine. The latter two models are equipped with reverse gearboxes. The CJ is NOT a replica of the R71. It’s a copy of the Soviet-built M-72 which was a knock-off of the R71. The word replica isn’t applicable. What’s what? All M1s and M1Ms have sidevalve engines. This is as true as you can get to the original R71 or M-72 predecessors. Easily recognized by the external distributor on the forward, left side of the engine. All M1S (Supers) have 12V, 32hp 746cc OHV engines. The CJ M1 is based on this machine. 650cc and 950cc OHV CJ engines were also made but they are very rare. Equally rare is the 6V OHV engine. It takes its name from the Chang Jiang River, also known as the Yangtze or, in English, the Long River. The CJ750 motorcycle is based on the 1956 Soviet IMZ (Irbitski Mototsikletniy Zavod) M-72 which was derived from the 1938 BMW R71. Nearly all of them have sidecars.

    They are often erroneously referred to as BMW “replicas” when in fact, they are derivatives of the IMZ M-72. The CJ750 originated with the 1938 BMW R71, then, by way of the Soviet M-72, found its way to China as the Chang Jiang. The Zundapp-based machine entered production in 1951. 4,248 were built before military motorcycle production was transferred to the Hongdu and Xingjiang machinery plants. Both factories remain subsidiaries of the state-run aeronautics industry to this day. By the mid-1950’s, the Soviets considered the M-72 to be obsolete. China would soon acquire all the tooling and produce their own M-72s. In light of this, the Zundapp-based machine was abandoned. According to some sources, it entered production in November, 1957 at the state-owned Ganjiang machinery factory. Early production used Russian M-72 parts. Early CJs were nearly identical to M-72s. The Chang Jiang drivetrain has been revised several times since production began. From 1957-66, CJs were equipped with so-called Type I engines and transmissions. This drivetrain was almost identical to those of the R71 and M-72. It was not until 1972 that the Type II engine replaced the Type I in general use. Continued use of the Type I engine in 1966-72 was the result of a surplus of Type I components. This was done for ease of maintenance, parts availability, and improved engine characteristics. Bikes with Type I engines often had their original gearboxes replaced with a Type II. Engines manufactured with a serial number of 661802 and higher are Type II. In the 1960’s, the factory was renamed the State-Owned Changjiang Machinery Factory. Gas tanks with built-in tool boxes appeared around this time. At this time, a 6V OHV engine with 30 horsepower was being developed. Only a few of these engines can be found today. They were quickly replaced with a 12V, 32 horsepower version. Only a handful of these machines were built, probably less than ten. Only a few 900cc engines have been found.

Beginning in the mid-1980’s, over a decade after the normalization of relations between China and the USA, China opened its markets to foreign motorcycle manufacturers which expedited the end of CJ750 mass production. Today, the marque is kept alive by interest from hobbyists. This marked the introduction of the M1S model. In 1986, the M1 model was upgraded with a 12V electrical system and a gearbox with reverse, and designated the M1M. Although the CJ750 is no longer produced per se, many have been restored from old military stock or assembled from parts. The CJ750 has become popular with enthusiasts outside China. R71 was successfully used in WW II by the Soviet Union. In the 1950’s, two M-72 vehicles were sold to China, and the Chinese started to produce their own M-72 (named as Yangtze River 750) in 1957. From the very beginning, the state-owned Chang-jiang Machinery Factory assumed the production of Yangtze River 750 products, and lots of M-72’s parts were installed in the product, such as mudguard, frame, wheel, starting key, and switch, etc. Some complete vehicles produced by the Soviet Union were called Yangtze River 750, and some engines were refitted in Chinese style.

    As you can see, the CJ features the sideways-on kickstart, and although it's easy to use, you'll not need to as the bike has electric start. It's recommended running the engine, gearbox and final drive all on the same 40-weight oil, which makes it easier at service time. Because of the CJ's simple design, anyone who has ever lifted a spanner could maintain their own pride and joy on a regular basis, and there is nothing on the bike which would require specialist tools in the normal run of things.
